Boosting green logistics in Slovenia

Novartis Slovenia has recently commissioned the company’s first-ever electric-powered delivery van equipped with a refrigeration unit for cold storage. The state-of-the-art vehicle, which is used for transporting pharmaceutical samples in cold-chain, not only helps the company at least eight metric tons of CO2 annually. It also sets an important precedent within the industry, which so far has been rather reluctant to break away from combustion-engine vehicles.

The van, which runs solely on solar energy, shuttles every day from the Novartis production facility in Mengeš to the quality control lab in Ljubljana to deliver pharmaceutical samples for analysis. For Primož Deferri, who works as a driver for the logistics partner Prigo, the switch to electric was initially a bit of a challenge. Deferri has completed two training courses to adapt to the peculiarities of the vehicle.

Primož Deferri checks the temperature of a cooler box. The samples, which are to be subjected to microbiological analysis, are stored inside the cooler boxes in the van’s cargo area. Each unit is equipped with a digital device, allowing continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity and pressure.

Primož Deferri plugs the van into the solar-powered charging station. Not only does the vehicle bring the company one step closer to its climate goals, but it also gives a fresh impetus to the development of green mobility in the industry.
